The Embera inhabit remote villages in the Rainforest of Panama near the Colombian border. Shamans use traditional masks in healing rituals or before hunts to ensure good luck. Masks are made from two types of jungle palms, using both sewing and knotting techniques. Fibers are hand-dyed with colors derived from bark, flowers, plants, and wood shavings. The masks are unique and highly prized for their originality of design.
