In 1831, Darwin set out on a five-year voyage on the HMS Beagle, keeping careful notes on his observations and speculations, and later publishing them in The Voyage of the Beagle. Despite suffering from some serious seasickness, Darwin's journal was a big hit. He then went on to co-author The Origin of Species with Alfred Russel Wallace, introducing his theory that all species of life have descended over time from common ancestors.
