The Field Museum is proud to be home to the original monument bronze sculpture, ‘The Red Palm Nut, Jane Goodall and David Greybeard’ by renowned artist Marla Friedman. The narrative sculpture depicts the first moment of connection between Dr. Jane Goodall DBE, as a twenty-six year old field researcher of the wild chimpanzee of Gombe, Tanzania, and David Greybeard, the first chimpanzee who allowed her to come close.

The marble figurine is a miniature, inspired by the iconic bronze. A lyrical, light rendition of the magical, transcendent moment Dr. Jane Goodall has referred to as her fondest memory of her early time with the Gombe wild chimpanzee and of David Greybeard, “a very special chimpanzee”. The Red Palm Nut epitomizes for Dr. Goodall and artist Marla Friedman our empathic connection with the animal world.

The bronze limited edition of The Red Palm Nut is represented exclusively by the esteemed Hollis Taggart gallery in New York City. The sculpture is the result of a two year collaboration between Dr. Jane Goodall and artist Marla Friedman.
