In the ancient society of Teotihuacan, located in present day central Mexico, leaders were often depicted with generic mask-like faces. Archaeologists believe the masks indicate that Teotihuacan may have been led by groups of people rather than any single leader. The ceramic mask depicted here dates from AD 100-600, during the peak of the society, and can be seen on display in the Field Museum's exhibit The Ancient Americas.
