Kachina (in the Hopi language, Katsina) are an important and cherished part of the Hopi culture These figures are representations of one of the hundreds of Katsinam, or spirit guides, who descend from the mountains as the winter season wanes to help villagers tend to their fields, care for their children, and tackle any other major task required to encourage the community and land to flourish. The Hopi were the first to carve kachina figures, which were were originally devised as a teaching tool for children as part of their cultural and religious training.
