Carnival in the Indigenous towns of Chiapas is not like carnival any place else. In Chiapas it a celebration of the last 5 days (The Dead Days) of the Mayan Calendar. It's wild and beautiful depending on which town you visit. The two closest villages to San Cristobal de las Casas are San Juan Chamula, and San Lorenzo Zinacantan. Both are very different in their fiestas, Chamula is more wild with the Changa's (Monkey men) dancing and blowing horns and lots of copal Incense. Today they ran the bulls and ran through 50 yds of fire. Zinacantan was calm compared to Chamula with people setting around in their beautiful blue outfits. Religious leaders walking in and music with the dancing Zapatistas.
