Privacy Policy

The Field Museum respects your privacy, and we would like you to understand how we collect, use and safeguard any personal information you provide to us on our web site. We will post any changes to this policy here, and by using our web site you consent to the collection and use of information as described in our current policy.

What specific personal information does The Field Museum collect from users?

The Field Museum does not collect any specific personal information about you - such as your name, address or e-mail address - unless you knowingly provide it to us. For example, we may ask you for personally identifying information if you attempt to contact us through our web site or if you participate in any of our online or broadcast activities. Generally, this information could include name, e-mail address, and a postal address. For teachers, we collect additional information on their school and the classes they teach.

What are cookies and how do we use them?

Some of the pages on our web site utilize "cookies" so that we can better serve you when you next return to our web site. Cookies are identifiers that a web site places on your computer's hard drive in order to facilitate the interaction between your computer and the web site. Most web browsers automatically accept cookies, but you can usually change your browser to prevent that. The information we collect and analyze is used to improve our service to you and is not related to any personally identifiable data. For example, the IP address of your computer (an IP address is a number assigned to your computer by your internet service provider) is included in the cookie. We can then check whether that computer has been used to visit our site before. We never compare the IP addresses to individual users, but only use the aggregated results (e.g., the number of unique visitors to the site). However, if it were necessary, such information could potentially be used to identify a user in order to comply with safety and/or security issues or with legal requirements.

What does The Field Museum do with this information?

Other than as described below, The Field Museum does not and will not sell, exchange, or release your personal information (name, e-mail address, mailing address, etc.) regardless of its source, to any third parties without your permission.

Generally, this information is used for our internal purposes only, and that might include contacting you. However, The Field Museum and its web site are public places dedicated to education and sharing of information, and therefore some of our online activities may involve sharing your submissions – but not personal information such as postal or e-mail addresses – with other visitors to our website or with educators, schoolchildren or members of the public. The Field Museum also shares information with carefully selected independent evaluators who use the information to assess the effectiveness of The Field Museum’s educational programming. Any such sharing will always be done in a manner consistent with the educational mission of The Field Museum.

Information about The Field Museum’s members may be selectively exchanged or given to other nonprofit organizations, but only if such organizations agree not to sell or otherwise permit the use of that information for any purposes other than direct contacts by that nonprofit organization. Any other information we would disclose to our partners in the educational or nonprofit world, or to any advertisers, would only be in the form of grouped statistics compiled from registration data, participants’ answers to survey questions, or contributions to online activities, webcasts, or broadcasts, or as otherwise required by law. None of the data so provided would include any personally identifiable information, unless required by law.

By participating in our on-line activities and submitting information to us, you agree to the indicated uses and disclosures of that information. If you are participating in an educational program but do not want information to be disclosed to our independent evaluators, you may “opt out” by contacting us via e-mail or regular mail and asking that your personally identifying information not be disclosed to our evaluators.
