The Hopi people believe in spirits called katsina (also variously spelled kachina), which represent the elements of nature. Hopi men carve katsina dolls most often from cottonwood as teaching tools for children to learn about the different types of katsina spirits. This small kachina representing Kwahu, Hopi for the eagle, is carved by George Pooley. Measures 5 inches tall, not including feathers.
