The Hopi people believe in spirits called katsina (also variously spelled kachina), which represent the elements of nature. Hopi men carve katsina dolls most often from cottonwood as teaching tools for children to learn about the different types of katsina spirits. This fine lizard katsina from Darance Chimerica, a member of the Fire Clan who lives on Mnnqapi, Third Mesa. Measures 11.5 inches tall not including feathers, includes natural wood stand.
