Navajo artists Delbert Buck, born in New Mexico in 1976, began carving at the age of nine, and through his observations of everyday life grew up to become a nationally recognized talent. Like most self-taught artists, Delbert took inspiration from the things around them and transformed them into his unique style. He most often portrays Navajo cowboys and their animal companions riding on unusual mounts, like this one featuring a startled looking giraffe being ridden by a Navajo and his dog.
