The Hopi people believe in spirits called kachina (also variously spelled katsina), which represent the elements of nature. Hopi men carve kachina dolls most often from cottonwood as teaching tools for children to learn about the different types of kachina spirits. Known as Hotsko in the Hopi language, this vintage kachina from an anonymous Hopi carver represents the screech owl.
Carved in the old style and delicately painted this kachina stands 6 inches tall.
