TheTohono O'odham people, also know as the Papago, reside in the Sonoran Desert in Arizona and Mexico. Well known for their basketry, their weavings began as utilitarian wares designed as everyday household objects. Today they are regarded as artwork with intricate patterns woven from various plant materials such as yucca plants, devil's claw and beargrass. This handsome basket was probably woven in the 1960's and later presented as an example of the artist's work at the Orange County Indian Show in Buena Park, California in 1979, where it received a first place award.
