Modern Mexican ceramicist Gorky Gonzalez has revived the lost art of traditional majolica pottery, which was originally developed in Guanajuato in the late 17th century. He first began his studies under his father, the noted sculptor Rodolfo Gonzalez, and was later granted a scholarship to learn from national living treasures, Tsuji Seimei and Kei Fijiwara in Japan. In 1992 he was awarded the National Award for Science and the Arts in Mexico. His work is all hand painted, making no two exactly alike.
