A Native American fetish is a carving from rock, shell, antler, wood or other material that depicts an animal or other spirit. The carving captures the spirit and the essence of the animal, not necessarily its exact detailed conformation. Traditionally the Zuni carvers have been regarded as the best artists of this age old craft. Here artist Navajo carver Herbert Davis has used a combination of jet, turquoise, coral and shell to create this fiercely lifelike bear.
